History

The Belgian Malinois was originally bred as a herding dog. Along with the Groenendael, Laekenois and Tervuren, it is one of the 4 herding breeds that originated in Belgium. In recent years, they are often used as police or protection dogs due to their trainability.

Appearance

Males will reach a height of 60 to 66cm (24 to 26 inches), while females will most often be a little bit smaller (55 to 60cm or 22 to 24 inches). They weigh 18 to 35kg (40 to 75lbs) depending on their size.

Personality

You can find a wide variety in peronalities and temperament of Belgian Malinois. This can be explained because they are used for lots of different jobs, ranging from herding to law enforcement and acting as a guard dog.

Trainability

The Belgian Malinois is a highly trainable dog with a big will to please, making them ideal partners for those who wish to get into dog sports.

Energy level

They have a high energy level, making it necessary for their owners to spend enough time with them. Play and training sessions along with walks will be needed in order to drain their energy. Just like other dogs, they can become destructive when their energy needs aren't met.
