Breed information: The Doberman Pinscher

Often portrayed in the movies as the protective dog of the bad guy, these guys are known for their loyalty. But unlike what is shown in the movies, these dogs are actually quite gentle.

History

The Doberman Pinscher is a fairly new breed, which was bred the first time in the 19th century by a man named Louis Dobermann. The story goes that he bred these dogs in order to protect him from bandits during his travels as a tax collector. Because of his guarding nature, he quickly became popular as a service or therapy dog. During World War II, Doberman Pinschers were often used in military operations.

Appearance

The Doberman Pinscher is a medium to big sized dog, with a size ranging from 61cm (24 inch) high to 71cm or about 28inch with females often being smaller than the males. Their optimal weight will sit between 27 and 45kg (60 to 100lbs).

Their build is very athletic, shaped with square proportions.

Personality

The Doberman Pinscher is a protective breed, making him more wary of strangers. In order to counter this, you should socialize them well. Socializing with other dogs at a young age is also imperative. If this is not done properly, they might tend to become harder to handle in proximity of other dogs. Because of their intelligence, they pick up behaviours and commands pretty quickly, but can become destructive when not mentally or physically challenged.

Trainability

Dobermans are very intelligent dogs. So they are highly trainable and and it's advised to put some time in their training. Especially since these dogs are fairly strong and can become hard to handle when not trained properly.

Energy level

The Doberman is a high energy dog breed. They need lots of exercise, both mentally and physically, in order for them to be happy. If their energy levels don't get drained enough, they might get destructive in order to release some frustration and energy.
